EDINBURG, TEXAS – DEC. 4, 2015 – A new Memorandum of Understanding signed Dec. 3 between The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, the state university of Tamaulipas, Mexico, will provide new collaborative opportunities to students, faculty and staff at both border institutions.

The MOU, signed by UTRGV President Guy Bailey and Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas Rector C. P. Enrique C. Etienne Pérez del Río, provides for cooperative efforts to promote academic interchange of faculty and students, joint research projects, exchange of academic publications, reports and other information, and collaborative professional development, among other activities as approved by both institutions.

Bailey said the signing formally continues a relationship that has been in place for more than 25 years.

“Our institutions share much in common. We both have medical schools and both of our medical schools will be dealing with similar kinds of issues,” Bailey said. “There is a synergy there. Also, each of our universities have programs that are attractive to faculty and students. So faculty and student exchanges are very strong. Finally, many of our students have connections across the border. This is a great opportunity for us to build for the future.”

Pérez del Río, who became his university’s rector in 2014, said he aims to lead his university from being “good” to “excellent,” and to produce graduates who not only are qualified, but also have strong values.

“We have established three goals or three areas of action – academic quality, research and internationalization of the institution,” he said, and cited some of their recent international awards and certifications for academic endeavors. “I am very proud to offer our university to you. We can do many great things together.”

The academic heads of both universities – Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Havidán Rodríguez and UAT’s Secretario Académico Dr. Marco Aurelio Navarro Leal – also spoke at the ceremony.

“We look forward to continuing to collaborate, expand and strengthen our partnerships,” Rodríguez said. “One of our core priorities is to become a gateway to the Americas. We are working hard to strengthen and expand our international programs to become a much more global institution.”

Navarro Leal said the border relationships that already exist in terms of families, the economy and growth already make this a strong region, and that there will be growing opportunities for students to fill needed positions in areas like technology and the space industry. Research will be important in medical technology, he said, and in meeting the countries’ common challenges of maintaining clean air and water.

“We need to start working together in terms of how we are going to prepare our students to face these new challenges,” he said.

The Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, based in Cd. Victoria, Tamps., has the highest enrollment in the state of Tamaulipas, serving about 40,000 students in 26 academic units, colleges and schools located in Reynosa, Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Tampico, Cd. Mante and Valle Hermoso. In addition to a medical school, it also has research and knowledge transfer centers.

The UTRGV Office of Global Engagement hosted the MOU ceremony, which was attended by deans and academic leaders from both institutions. The OGE oversees International Programs and Partnerships, International Admissions and Student Services and the Language Institute.

Dr. Dennis Hart, UTRGV associate provost of the OGE, said UTRGV is looking for strategic partnerships.

“We want partners that are aligned carefully with our goals and our needs and where we can fit with them,” he said. “What we are hoping for here is an effective relationship with our medical schools, our business schools and other schools, as well. They are a strategic partner.”
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“We should always remember that we’re here because they were there, and it’s very important,” Bailey said. “We can't honor them enough.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">UTRGV Vice President for Student Success Dr. Kristin Croyle, who spoke at the Edinburg ceremony, expressed her appreciation for veterans and praised UTRGV’s student veterans for the contributions they make to the campus community.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“When they come to campus, our student veterans make campus a better and richer place for all of us,” she said. “They bring a level of discipline and dedication to their work here that is an inspiration to our students and to our faculty and our staff. They support each other and support other students, and advocate for what they know is right, and the right way that we should treat our students.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Eloisa Tamez, a U.S. Army veteran, UTRGV professor of nursing and keynote speaker at the Brownsville event, said the nation’s veterans symbolize the freedom we enjoy. Tamez, whose father was a veteran, served as a nurse for 27 years when she joined the nursing service workforce.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It is my belief that we nurses are the best patient advocates and must take this role seriously, so our veterans receive optimal healthcare, always,” she said. “This has always been my commitment to our veterans, and I assure that all personnel in my work of service knew that and practiced it.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Those at the Edinburg event heard from guest speakers, Capt. David Weiss of the U.S. Army National Guard, and former U.S. Army Sgt. Lynette Linn, who talked about their experiences in the military and about the importance of taking time out to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“When you live your lives, make sure it’s a testament to those who are no longer able to live theirs,” Weiss said.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Both campus ceremonies had the presentation of colors and a 21-gun salute. At the Brownsville ceremony, three cannon salutes honored those currently serving in the military, those who served in the past and those who died while serving.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Students said they appreciated that UTRGV was honoring veterans and that the university is providing services for student veterans and their loved ones.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Patrick Roberts, UTRGV’s chapter president of the SVA, served eight and a half years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He said it is important for student veterans to have resources available to them, to help them adjust from military to college life.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“There’s a huge transition phase that many veterans go through, getting out of the military. And having a department like the Veterans Services Center and an organization like the Student Veterans of America chapter here at UTRGV and at other campuses across America, helps bridge that gap,” he said. “It helps that transition process. It gives veterans a place to go to, other veterans to talk to and feel welcome, to feel like they can be themselves until they get used to being around everyone else.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Quentin Cammack, a U.S. Navy veteran who earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from UTRGV legacy institution UT Brownsville, said Veteran’s Upward Bound helped him with a variety of needs when he was a student, like helping him enroll in classes and submitting paperwork for the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I don't normally look back at people that helped me, but I appreciate them helping me,” an emotional Cammack said. “Looking back at me attaining a bachelor’s degree was a very important thing. My mom and dad never finished college and, for me, it was a big feat to prove that I can do it, and to also help show my daughter that she can do this, too. Just put your mind to it and focus hard, and one day you can attain your goals.”

About the Design Challenge

Sponsored by NASA and administered by the Texas Space Grant Consortium, since Fall 2002, the TSGC DESIGN CHALLENGE is a unique academic experience offering undergraduate students an opportunity to propose, design and fabricate a solution to a topic of importance to NASA and its mission.

DESIGN CHALLENGE topics are submitted by researchers working with NASA or its contractor community on current projects of interest. Student teams work on the topic of their choice over the course of one or two semesters. The overall experience pairs the student team and faculty advisor with a research-directed mentor; and provides student team members with an opportunity to engage in scientific research, hands-on design, space-related career opportunities, meeting presentation and educational outreach.

As DESIGN CHALLENGE teams progress through a series of Levels and Option Areas, they are involved in taking a real-world research topic of interest from the idea-stage to an actual workable design.

Because progress is team-directed, the overall program is able to accommodate a variety of design sequences taught in institutions of higher learning throughout the State of Texas [one-semester design, two-semester design, design and build, etc.]. Six team-directed increments [BASE, three specific design Levels, and two Option Areas] allow teams to decide how far they will take the design initiative while accumulating funds to support the team's effort. Up to two teams per year per institution will be fully-funded to participate - based upon availability of projects and funding.

Monetary awards are made available to individual teams upon satisfactory completion of design Levels. Teams are also eligible to receive travel grant funds to support team travel to the end of semester Design Challenge Showcase and assist student-members with off-campus learning, site visits, outreach ventures or meeting participation.

In the first game with black pieces Anton opted for a solid opening and firmly defended.
The second game was way more complicated. Anton gave 3 pieces to win a queen. Before the opponent managed to coordinate the pieces, Anton started an attack and succeed with it.

In the third round Anton is paired against a grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, who is currently rated 5th on the world’s rating list. Caruana was born in the US, then moved to Europe and represented Italy, but recently has come back to his original US federation.

The UTRGV Chess Coach, Bartek Macieja, provided the following statement:

“Caruana is an extremely strong opponent with many interesting new opening ideas. His technique is phenomenal. However if Anton succeeds in obtaining dynamic complicated positions, his chances will visibly increase.
Similarly to the first match against ex-world champion Rustam Kasimdzanov, due to differences in styles Anton’s chances of success will keep increasing with every tie-break and the reduction of time control.

The qualification to the 2015 World Chess Cup was the biggest achievement an UTB/UTPA/UTRGV student has ever had in any sport officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Defeating ex-world champion in the first round set the bar even higher. Now, by qualifying to Round 3 Anton set a new record.”

The 2015 World Chess Cup is an official part of the 2014-2016 World Chess Championship Cycle.

Official website: http://www.bakuworldcup2015.com
There are 128 players, including 3 ex-world champions. Anton Kovalyov qualified to that prestigious event from the 2015 Continental Chess Championship, where he shared for the 3rd place.

The winner and the runner up of the World Cup 2015 will qualify to the Candidates stage of the World Championship cycle 2014 - 2016.

The Candidates Tournament to determine the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship Match shall be organized in the first quarter of 2016. Eight (8) players will participate in the Candidates Tournament and the winner qualifies for the World Chess Championship Match in the last quarter of 2016.UTRGVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15107577453776812114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-358337912379991928.post-85738136154729259222015-09-11T17:55:00.000-05:002015-09-11T17:55:43.719-05:00Local master’s programs ranked in top 10 nationwide by Washington Monthly

Picnic with the President also will be held for students on the Brownsville Campus at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Gran Salon.

UTRGV, the first public university in Texas in the 21st century, opened Monday, Aug. 31, with 29,045 students, 4,000 of them entering freshmen, on both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses.

Bailey said he was happy to kick start this tradition for the university during Best Week Ever festivities, calling it an opportunity to meet as many new Vaqueros as possible.

“I’ve been doing this for students for a very long time,” said Bailey, who credits his late wife Jan with having the idea for a picnic event back in 2007. “It started in Kansas City (University of Missouri–Kansas City) almost 10 years ago, and we did it in Lubbock (Texas Tech University). It is always very popular. And it gives me a chance to meet some of the students, so I’m delighted to be here.”

Asked what advice he was dishing up for students coming through the line to be served, he said, “Go to class.”

Overall, Bailey said, UTRGV’s opening days have gone well and he looks forward to a great year.

“We had normal glitches, like every university has, but I was very pleased,” he said.

Bailey wasn’t the only university leader to don a white UTRGV apron to serve students. He was joined by some members of his administrative team: Dr. Havidán Rodríguez, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs; Dr. Janna Arney, vice president for Operations and his chief of staff; Veronica Gonzales, vice president for Governmental and Community Relations; Martin Baylor, executive vice president for Finance and Administration; Dr. Kelly Cronin, vice president for Institutional Advancement; Dr. Theresa Maldonado, senior vice president for Research, Innovation, and Economic Development; and Dr. Kristin Croyle, vice president for Student Success – helped Bailey serve lunch to about 1,500 students before they headed back to class.

“It is such an honor to give back to the students,” Arney said. “They have had a stressful first day and second day. For many of them, it’s their first time in college. So we thought, what is better than a free meal? And what better way to meet them than to serve them.”

Also on the serving line and greeting students were Alberto Adame, inaugural president of the UTRGV Student Government Association, and Justin Drake, the newly appointed University of Texas System student regent, who toured the UTRGV campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg on Tuesday.

Sophomores Melissa Duran, a nursing major from San Benito, and Alexis Martinez, an English major from Donna, were on their way to get some lunch at the dining hall when they realized the president’s picnic was happening next door in the Ballroom. Duran said they did not want to pass up the opportunity to meet him.

“He asked me about my major and where I was from. He was really nice and humble,” Duran said.

Martinez, who hopes to ace her classes this semester, said meeting President Bailey was the highlight of her day.

“He was very friendly,” she said. “He even told me that, since I was an English major, not to worry. It will not be so hard.”

As upbeat music blasted loudly across the Quad, the Student Involvement Office distributed lots of UTRGV goodies – T-shirts, bandanas and key chains – and held a student organization fair. Games, music and two shaved ice food trucks were parked outside the Ballroom for students to enjoy a cool treat on a hot day.

Story by Cheryl Taylor and Gail Fagan

EDINBURG & BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – AUG. 30, 2015 – Before the sun came up Sunday, about 50 cyclists gathered near the iconic Bronc statue on the Edinburg Campus. Simultaneously, 88 riders assembled at the Main lawn of the Brownsville Campus.

Each group then headed out to meet up in the middle.

Dubbed Tour de Valley, the ride was a symbolic event to commemorate two legacy institutions – The University of Texas–Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville – riding together into the future as one: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Organized as part of the weeklong <span style="color: #0563c1; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">#BestWeekEver activities as UTRGV opens for the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 31, one group pedaled east and the other pedaled northwest, meeting at the Iwo Jima Memorial on the campus of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. Then, together, they rode in solidarity to the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen, a central location for the UTRGV School of Medicine now awaiting accreditation.

Mercedes resident and cyclist Lisa Marie Treviño, 25, is a UTRGV senior majoring in biology and psychology. Treviño has taken advantage of all the higher education opportunities in the Valley, having attended Texas State Technical College and South Texas College before transferring to UTPA.

She started biking in June, and her enthusiasm for the sport led her to create a Facebook page called UTRGV Bike Trail. As she mounted her brightly lit Schwinn, she said the coming together would be emotional, and the ride shows that both campuses are one.

“We need unity. If we want to be known as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, we want to appreciate both areas and celebrate Brownsville and Edinburg merging together,” said Trevino, who hopes to become a medical doctor.

At the race’s end, Treviño said it was a long journey, full of some challenging inclines, but rewarding.

Tired after their ride and seated in the shade of the RAHC while enjoying fresh fruit and fajita tacos, Treviño, other riders and family members were greeted by Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell.

“Welcome to Harlingen, and more importantly, welcome to another campus of UTRGV,” Boswell said. “This bike ride symbolizes the coming together of the Valley and its many communities, including Northern Mexico. Your ride was like the Olympic torch, being carried from town to town, and now the torch will be lit on the new university, an innovative model of higher education.”

UTRGV President Guy Bailey was on hand to greet the riders, saying UTRGV will be greater than the sum of two parts.

“We can do things that the individual schools could not have achieved alone,” Bailey said. “UTRGV is going to bring people into the Valley, people who will love it and want to stay and make it their home.”

Among the cyclists who faced the easterly headwind in high humidity was Irma Hermida, who earned her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from UTPA in 1999.

An employee at the university since 2008, Hermida will be UTRGV’s IT communications coordinator, keeping students, faculty and staff informed of the IT services available to them. A frequent cyclist in Valley biking groups the past seven years, Hermida was attracted by the symbolism of the Tour de Valley bike ride.

Cris Trejo, UTRGV assistant vice president for Community Engagement and Assessment, and chief organizer of the event, said the university did indeed keep cyclists’ safety at the forefront of its Tour de Valley planning. At registration, they recommended that cyclists be experienced and could maintain a minimum pace of 13-14 miles per hour. Rest stops were arranged along the routes from the east and west. The ride included three police escorts and two SAG (support and gear) vehicles from Bicycle World and JT Cycling, riding along with supplies and water. A vehicle also was provided to pick up riders and their bikes if they couldn’t complete the ride.

Hermida, who directed the UTPA and Team McAllen Cycling’s Triathlon for Racing event that raised nearly $25,000 in scholarships from 2011-2014, said prior to the ride her attitude toward the transition had been like a “pendulum, swinging back and forth.”

“I reminisce about being a Bronc and our colors … It is hard to let go of something you have known so long. But I can also see why we need to move forward and let go. It is for the betterment of our community,” she said.

“To be part of history and this whole new initiative of creating a new university – we know it is going to have an impact – on our future generations, economically. It is going to change this area dramatically. To be in the middle of it is amazing.”

A cyclist since age 18, Dr. Walter Diaz, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at UTRGV and former dean of UTPA’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said he rides every weekend because it is a fun activity.

“Today’s ride was special because it is symbolic,” Diaz said. “People are crossing most of the Valley, and it is a good way to reach out into the whole community. There are employees here, but many cyclists today who are not. It’s a good thing.”

Michael Padgett, 64, graduated in 1974 from then-Pan American University, in biology. Recently retired from teaching physics at McAllen High School, Padgett calls the creation of UTRGV “a move forward.”

Padgett was a close friend of experienced cyclist and UTPA staff member Eddie Arguelles, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2014 while biking. Padgett said the Tour de Valley not only represents the union of the two legacy institutions, but also brings more awareness about safety and the need for drivers to share the road with cyclists.

“I think it’s awesome that UTRGV is starting up here. This will be a goal for our kids, to make good grades and get into UTRGV,” Morones said. “H-E-B is so supportive of education. One way is with Read 3, a very successful program. I was in the meeting just recently when UTRGV committed to continuing support of Read 3. I hope a lot of the youngsters who participate in Read 3 will get a good start and go on to be students at UTRGV.”
